Tho Vienna correspondent of tho ‘Daily Telegraph ’ says that, according to Prague newspapers, Germany sent a Note to the Czechoslovakian Government, demanding that the case of Bruno Weigel should bo reinvestigated and tho persons responsible punished, Weigel compensated and guarantees given that similar cases will not recur. If the answer is unsatisfactory the Note states, the German Government has “further measures” in reserve. [Last week the German Press gave prominence, accompanied by veiled threats of reprisal, to tho alleged torture of a German, Bruno Weigel, in a Czechoslovakian prison at Prague. Weigel was arrested, and it was alleged that he was tortured because he refused to give information about Nazi activities in Czechoslovakia. He was released without explanation. Tho Press said tho soles of his feet were beaten with rubber truncheons, and that electricity was applied to them. He was told that ho and his wife would be condemned to death. An official communication from Prague later categorically denied that Weigel was ill-treated. It explained that Weigel was detained on charges of espionage and illegally organising Nazi groups in Czechoslovakia.
