DIRTY STREETS

" DISGRACE TO CITY ” LITTERED WITH WASTE AHD UHHOSED The dirty condition of the main streets of Dunedin was one of the subjects discussed by the Amenities Society at its annual meeting yesterday afternoon. “ I am sorry to say that I cannot see any improvement in the dirty streets, despite the pressure brought to bear on the City Council,” said Mr Crosby Morris. “ The streets are, in my opinion, a disgrace ten this city and will remain a disgrace until the City Council takes in hand the prohibition of the throwing away indiscriminately • of papers, cigarette cartons, and tram tickets.” ''ln George street the other day he noticed a tram conductor throwing a ticket butt into the street. The conductor was employed by the corporation. The practice of littering the streets was an offence against the by-laws and would cease if instructions were given by the’ City Council to the police. The main streets were, apart from litter, dirty, and should be hosed, Mr Morris considered, and Princes street looked very dirty yesterday. If the main streets were hosed down early in the morning before the traffic started their appearance would bo greatly improved. Mr George, Simpson said the dog nuisance was worse than the litter on the streets. Ther ( e was a by-law providing that dogs should be taken on the streets only when on a leash. The owners should keep the dogs inside their properties or destroy them if they would not use leashes.

Various suggestions for more and improved waste paper boxes on the streets, in the reserves, and in the trams were made, and Mr Morris said the questions would be taken up with the City Council.
