OBITUARY

MBS JANET STEWART A long link with the Port Chalmers district was broken on Saturday with the passing of Mrs Janet R. B. Stewart, of “Dalkeith.” Bora on the Flat at Sawyers Bay in 1850, Mrs Stewart was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Thomson, pioneer settlers by the ship Blundell in 1848, and for close on 87 years had lived within half a mile of her birthplace. After leaving Sawyers Bay, the family moved to the township, and occupied a house on tbs site of what is now the Creed Memorial Methodist Church, and'later, when the residence at “ Dalkeith ” was erected, moved there.' The deceased was present as an infant at the opening of the original Presbyterian Church at Port Chalmers, and was continuously a member of the congregation. In 1933 she attended and took part in the jubilee of the opening of the present church. Mrs Stewart shared iri all the trials of the early pioneers, fend was noted for her over-ready willingness to assist in time of trouble. Up to two years ago she took an active interest in the Port Chalmers Old Identities’ Association, of which she was last year made a Ufa member. In 1878 she married Mr William Stewart, of Port Chalmers, who predeceased her 10 years ago, and she is survived by a family of two daughters and five sons—Mrs A. W. Chisholm (Sawyers Bay), Mrs „J. Wood (Balclutba!, Messrs W. K. A. Stewart (Auckland), J. D. Stewart (Australia!, G. M. Stewart (Port Chalmers!, C. J. Stew o ft (Canterbury!, and P. R. St"W* art (Gore!. One daughter, Mrs R.
