SHDRT STOPPAGE AT WESTFIELD [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, June 26. Fourteen men engaged in heef-killing at the Westfield freezing works ceased operations on Wednesday following a dispute among themselves as to division of the work and pay to the men working on the chain system. No work was done yesterday or this morning, but after a conference attended by the Conciliation Commissioner (Air R. E. Brice) the men returned to work this afternoon. WELLINGTON, June 25. An offer of 2s 3d an hour for general labourers with a 10 per cent, increase over the 1931 rate for men engaged in special work was not accepted by the workers’ assessors when the Dominion builders, contractors, and general labourers’ dispute was resumed before Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, to-day. The workers’ claim was for 2s 9d an hour as a minimum. After a long discussion the proceedings were adjourned until July 14. The questions held over included overtime, holidays, suburban and country work, and the form of the award.
