[Tho Lindbergh case produced a sequel in New York on April 24 with the indictment of four men for kidnapping Paul Wendell, whose “ confession ” of murdering the baby gained Hauptmann three days’ life after ho had been scheduled to die. One of those indicted was Ellis Parker, jun., son of a famous New Jersey detective, whom Governor Hoffman employed in an attempt to prove Hauptmann innocent. According to the charge, Parker, jun., and his accomplices, assaulted Wendell in New York, kidnapped him, and held him prisoner while he was transported to New Jersey. The case developed in a startling fashion when Parker, jun., eluded the polic and said ho was determined to avoid indictment on the kidnapping charge.
