FANCIERS’ SHOW

A RECORD DISPLAY QUALITY AH IMPRESSIVE FEATURE Staged on a comprehensive scale, with the general quality of the exhibits the best in years, the annual show of the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club, which was opened yesterday, is one of the most successful in the club’s history. Even the spacious Brydono Hall was barely large enough to accommodate all the exhibits, and the big crowd that viewed them after the judges had completed their heavy task. Compared with last year, the entries increased by 231, spread over practically all the sections. A feature of the exhibition, which will close to-morrow night, is the number of budgerigars of every hue, and it was in this class that the judges had the most difficulty in singling out the placed birds. A pleasing aspect was the success of Dunedin breeders, and in that respect.Mr George Graham scored heavily, his entries being outstanding. The show is well organised. JUDGES’ REMARKS. The judge of the budgerigar section (Mr J. A. Morris) remarked that the birds were indeed a -credit to the exhibitors, and there were several outstanding specimens which could compete successfully with anything in the Dominion. The best budgerigar in the show was a yellow cock, exhibited by Mr R. E. Mahan, which was shown in rare condition and feather. He was a bird of outstanding type and colour, and, if a little bolder in the head, would be close to the ideal. Another fine specimen was Mrs P. Cairns’s champion greywing cobalt, cock. Mr Morris also complimented the exhibitors on the number of foreign birds, the entry of 39, which was a record, including many rare specimens seldom seen in New Zealand. The best specimens of the parrot family other than budgerigars, were a pair of Rose! la parrots, exhibited by Mr T. L. MacLean. Judging the birds all through the homer classes, said Mr T. Scoullar, there was a good percentage which was well up to standard, but, in the biggest class, the blue chequer cocks, the quality was disappointing. The old birds in the pied cock class were good, and the 500-mile hens were very good. Mr W. Hargreaves entered the best in this latter class. Competition in the tumbler pigeons was limited, Mr L. F. Soper sending forward the majority of the exhibits. There was an interesting class of roller canaries. The judge, Mrs F. A. King, said that one or two of the birds would not sing, but most responded well. The winning bird, shown by Mr G. R. Baxter, had outstanding tone, and Mr R. A. Lilley’s entry, which secured second place, also gave a good performance. Two birds tied for third place t as it, was impossible to distinguish between their merits. The champion Yorkshire canary was a novice entry by Mr H. Woodger. In the poultry section the utility classes comprised the majority of the entry, with Leghorns as the most popular breed. The bantam and fancy classes were represented by good-qual-ity entries. One of the outstanding birds in this section was_a game bantam cockerel shown by Mr W. J. Currie, which won a champion, three specials, and one first prize. The best game cock in the fancy classes *vas Mr R. W. Brown’s entrv in the henny, muff, or tassel cock class. Several important awards were made in the poultry section, including New Zealand and South Island championships. Additional results;— HOMING PIGEONS Judge: Mr J. Scoullar. COLOUR CLASSES. OLD BIRDS.
