FIRE IN OPERA HOUSE
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO OLD BUILDING [Pbe United Press Association.] WANGANUI, June 24. Fire this morning caused considerable damage to the Municipal Opera House, a wooden building erected in 1899, and opened by the Bland Holt Company. The outbreak started in the sweets stall, at the rear of the dress circle and spread rapidly along the sacking under the iron rOof, and when the brigade arrived it was burning from end to end. Large quantities of water were poured into the building, the’ seating in the circle being littered with plaster, ’ cinders, etc., and thoroughly saturated! Apart from the roof and portions of the upper weather-board-ing, the structural, damage in other parts was not great. The stage, scenery; and curtain, etc., are intact; The building was insured for £2,250, and its accessories for £1,055. ‘ . The building was used last night lor the Blomfield-Rumberg wrestling bout.
