SHOOTERS HUMBUGGED

£20,000 REQUIRED TO PROVIDE BIRDS MINISTER MEETS ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY [Per United Press Association.] WHANGAREI, June .24. The Hon. W. E. Parry, meeting a deputation .from the Whangarei Acclimatisation Society last night, expressed surprise at a statement that teal had become so plentiful in Whangarei district that they were a menace. Mr Parry was surprised in view of the evidence against the statement. ‘ ‘ We cannot expect game to increase in view of existing conditions,” he said; Unless' we stopped killing breeding birds for a time and reared and liberated many more than at present, the sport would go back,- and it would be a retrograde step if the sport were allowed to go out of existence. Prom the point of view of advertising the country and attracting tourists it was invaluable. .

He considered that if sportsmen wanted to keep sport going it was necessary to commence a vigorous policy of rearing and liberating birds to the extent—in respect of pheasants—of at least 30,000 a year. He was tired of seeing shooters humbugged, and wanted to give them birds for their sport. This would cost at least £20.000.

He would have sugested these matters at the conference recently held at Wellington if he had had the oppor tunity. He considered it feasible to borrow the required money at a cheap rate of interest in order to. place the sport on a good foundation again.
