GUY HOUSING SCHEME
BIG DEMAND FOR DWELLINGS DOUBLE THE AVAILABLE SUPPLY “ Tho housing survey being carried out by 11 inspectors indicates that a great many houses in Dunedin should be condemned, and the Health Department is ready to condemn them as soon as suitable houses aro available for the people who will bo evicted,” stated the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) this morning when discussing the pressing demand for houses in the city. Tho whole of the Clyde Hill sections, numbering 65, had been applied for, under the city’s housing scheme, and there was a surplus list of 80 applicants for dwellings, said the Mayor. Moreover, further applications were being received daily, evidence of the need for more houses and the attractiveness of the council’s scheme.
In addition, 30 applications have been received from persons who had their own sections, and in a number of cases applicants have submitted their own designs. In cases where such designs are regarded as acceptable and the prices compare favourably with the ‘‘standard” prices for the council’s designs, such are to be provided for'in the scheme, together with those applicants who have their own sections—as far as available finance permits. Tho order of consideration of application was primarily determined, other things being equal, by the date of receipt of the application, explained the Mayor. “We know that there are many houses in Dunedin which should be condemned, hut it would be foolish to demolish them until other houses are available for occupation,” said the Mayor. Tenders have now been let for the erection of 20 houses at Clyde Hill.
