METROPOLITAN FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Metro, politan Fire Board was held yesterday, afternoon, when Mr W. W. Callender occupied the chair. A letter was received from the Under. Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs giving notification of the per. sonnel of the board for the ensuing term. The members of the new board are as follow:—Mr J. Robinson (appointed by His .Excellency the Governor. General), Messrs W. W. Callender, E. : EL Ferguson, W. W. Johnstone, and L. G. Wilson (elected by fire insurance companies), Messrs J. Wilson. M. Sil. verstone, and W. A. Scott (elected by, the Dunedin City Council) Mr, N. Dj Anderson (elected by the Mosgiel, St.Hilda, and Green Island Borough Coun. oils). Before proceeding with the business of the meeting the Chairman extended a welcome to Mr J. Robinson, the new nominee of the Government on the board. FINANCIAL. Accounts amounting to £1,349 2e 7d were passed for payment. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The Superintendent submitted the following report on the work of the brigade for the month of May:— Calls Attended.—Fires, 16; chimney fires, 15; rubbish and bush, 3; false alarms —malicious 2, justifiable 3, automatic 7, accidental 4; total 50. South Dunedin attended 11 calls, Roslyn 3, : Green Island 1, and Mosgiel 1. Serious Fires.—There was an entire absence of serious outbreaks during the period under review. Causes of Fires.—Backfire, 1; defeo. five chimneys, 3; defective range, 1; hot ashes, 1; overheating, 3; short cir. cuit, 1; spark from copper fire, 1; unknown, 5; total, 16. Properties Affected.—Attached shed,1; detached outhouses, 4; dwellings, 4;1 girls’ college, 1; milk supply depot, 1; motor vehicles, 3; signboard, 1; timber ■factory, 1; total, 16. Chimney Fires Attended.—Central 9* South Dunedin 4, Roslyn 1, Mosgiel 1;J total, 15. Staff and Plant.—The staff is at full strength, and the members have been engaged in station duties, practices,and physical drills. Fireman J. Moffat was compelled to relinquish duty on May 20 as the result of suffering an injury to his left knee, but was able to return to duty on May 29. W. F.Richardson was passed as physically fit for duty on the auxiliary staff by the board’s medical officer, and commenced duty at the South Dunedin station on May 1. The plant is in first-class order. Automatic . Fire. Alarm.—The automatic fire alarm recently installed on the premises of Carter’s Box Factory,; Ward street, was connected to the brigade’s alarm system on May 4.

Pressure at the various stations at 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. respectively has been:! —Central, 751 b and 1101 b; South Dunedin, 901 b and 1251 b; Roslyn, 1251 b and 1251 b. The report was adopted.
