BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

CATTLE PRICES SLIGHTLY EASIER Over the opening stages of the sale fat cattle sold at Burnside to-day at values on a par with the high ra'tes ruling a week ago, but there was an easing tendency in the latter part of the market. The absence of exporters was mainly responsible for a poorer sale of fat lambs than usual, there b - ixxg a number of passings. Some very attractive bullocks were seexi among the yarding of 315 head of cattle, but, as usual, there was a number of light and unfinished sorts. There was also a good penning of cows and heifers, with a following of medium stuff and- a tail end of xveedy specimens. Competition was good from the start, prices being equal to those given a week ago. These values remained level during the sale of the first few races, after which there was an easing, and prices dropped to the extent of about 10s a head. A very small entry of some 1,200 fat sheep was yarded. The quality on the average was very poor, although there were a few pens of prime wethers. The remainder of this sex were very ordinary sorts. _ There were also some good ewes, but in small quantity, while the majority of the section was made up of medium grades and several of second quality. Th© sale had not proceeded very far at the time of going to press, but until then values for wethers were up about 3s a head. Th© 300 odd lambs sent in made up a very small yarding, and th© quality generally was very disappointing. There were only a few butchers’ lambs, the majority being of the medium and very light class. The latter were suitable only for holding over for shearing. Butchers were busy buyers for all prime sorts, but the other types were neglected, and the greater part of the yarding was passed. Fat pigs, of which there were 124 yarded, sold at increased rates, baconera bringing from £3 12s to £4 7s and porkers from £l 15s to £2 19s. Both sorts were worth about 6id lb. There were also 35 store nigs in the penning. Competition was keen when the smalt entry of about 60 head of vealers was placed before buyers. Prices were firm at last week’s level, the best selling to £4 ss, with others ranging from £2 5s to £3. Mostly cows and heifers were entered in the store cattle section, which included two pens of steers which sold well. One pen of four and five-•year-olds brought £8 17s 6d, and on© of two-year-olds sold at £5 16s. Heifers brought from £2 'ss to £4 ss. A medium entry of boners sold at late rates.
