SCOTTISH SOCIETY

The monthly social and dance of the Scottish Society was held in the Victoria Hall on Saturday night, a record gathering of members and visitors being present. It being ladies’ night, the arrangements were conducted by tho Ladies’ Social Committee. The convener (Mrs John Stewart), accompanied by Mrs S. Hill and Mrs Munro, were piped to tlie platform by the lady piper, Miss Taylor, representative from (Balclutha Scottish Society. The chief,_ Mr S. Wright, and party were piped into tho hall by tho official piper, Mr R? Hornal. Before opening the social, the patron, Mr John M‘Donaid, made reference to tho death of Mr J. H. Fraser, and as a matter of respect asked the gathering to stand while tho piper played ‘ Tho Flowers of the Forest.’ In her opening remarks, Mrs Stewart extended a hearty welcome to all members and visitors. A special welcome was given the Balclutha visitors, Mrs Sterling (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Halkett (Karamea), and Mr Farquharson (Hastings Scottish Society). Items were given by Mrs Buchanan, Miss Jean Calder, and Miss Clara Thorn, and Highland dances under Misses Reta Warren, B. Harris, M. Bressel, J. Brown, and Macphorson, and Master Jack Millar. Mrs Smith and Mrs Robertson acted as M.C.s Miss Taylor was the lady piper, and the Arcadian Dance Band provided the dance music. The newly-renovated and well-heated Victoria Hall was greatly appreciated by the visitors.
