YOUNG MEN'S BUSINESS SOCIETY
Mr N. Croft occupied the chair at the weekly meeting of the Dunedin Young Men’s Advertising and Business Society. The business of the club was quickly dealt with, and ■ the speaker for the evening, Mr Bridgman, who has recently returned from his travels abroad, welcomed. New Zealand, Mr Bridgman said, was an isolated country, and a trip abroad altered one’s opinions in many ways as well as broadening one’s mind. Sydney, continued the speaker, impressed one with .the tremendous amount of traffic on the streets. The people in Colombo had a very keen business outlook, even going to the extent of selling newspapers of yesterday’s issue. One of the great attractions of this city was the Temple of the Tooth. At Southampton one obtained the first glimpse of England. A notable feature of the English countryside was the absence of wire fences, so very noticeable in New Zealand, but the native bush of New Zealand more than compensated for this. New Zealanders, said Mr Bridgeman, were assured of a very hearty welcome in England. In Germany, Mr Bridgeman found that all were loyal to Herr Hitler, but were very reluctant to talk about th© Nazi regime, and a stranger could feel the tension in the air. An interesting feature of his stay, in Holland was a mock air raid. This was announced at 10 p.m. by a siren blaring and all lights being extinguished, and in a few minutes planes circled th© city. The lights were not turned on again after the raid, and one found it very annoying stumbling ronud the cobbled streets. After an interesting stay in the* United States of America Mr Bridgeman crossed the Pacific and. landed in Auckland.
