As yet, two ports of call in New Zealand have been planned for, said Mr Lammers, but should trade warrant an extension this would be made (states the ‘Dominion’). “The first boat is due in New Zealand on May 14. She is named Maetsuycker, after on© of Abel Tasman’s counsellors, and it will be her maiden voyage.” He said the ship was one of the latest motor vessels to be built, and it had a tonnage of 4,000. Locked in the purser’s safe aboard the P. and O. liner Comorin, which sailed for London from Melbourne on April 7, is a small package, which, although valued at only a few shillings, will possibly be handled with more care than other and more valuable articles in the safe. This package contains a plain wreath of Australian gum leaves and nuts which will be placed on the Cenotaph in London on Empire Day. The wreath was sent by the committee of the Empire Day movement of Victoria, through the generosity of Messrs Macdonald, Hamilton, and Co. INCREASING VOLUME. —Cargoes for New Zealand.— Sydney agents for the principal shipping companies trading between Australia and New Zealand said recently that there has been an appreciable increase in the volumes of cargo carried both to and from New Zealand during the last few years. The greater increase has been in cargoes from Australia, but it had always beten a oneway trade from the shipowner’s viewpoint. The increase was not yet great enough to warrant any increase in the cargo tonnage in the trade. Commenting on the decision of the headquarters of th© Union Steam Ship Co. to send the passenger liner Manama to Sydney on a purely cargo voyage, the Sydney office stated that it was purely an* emergency measure to cope with orders for space which happened to be on hand. The Manama was on the point of being laid up for the winter, but was still in commission. The volume of passenger business available at this time of the year did not make it worth while to staff the vessel for the carrying of passengers. NATURE OF EXPORTS. Th© value of Australian exports to New Zealand had risen steadily for a number of years. In 1931-32 their value. in Australian currency was £2,603,848. By 1934-35 they had increased to £3,617,339, and for 1935-36 the total was £4,396,840. Imports to from New Zealand, valued in sterling,. rose from £988,719 in 1931-32 to £1,480,093 in 1934-35, and £1,773,250 in* 1935-36. In 1935-36 Australia sent to New Zealand metals, metal manufactures, machinery valued at £A1,174,206; foodstuffs valued at £A770,064; apparel and textiles, £A400,892; drugs and chemicals, including fertilisers, £A288,287; minerals, £A119,233; and paints, £A102,123. Of the minerals, the value of coal was £A105,855, a decrease from 193435, when coal valued at £109,815 was exported. CHANCES FOR OFFICERS. Officers of the British merchant service, who for long have had a period in the doldrums owing to laid-up tonnage and trade depression, now have an opening in the fighting arm of the British fleets. Britain’s Navy is short of officers, and is offering chances to officers of the merchant service to transfer to commissions in the Navy. Yougner men in the merchant service are invited by the Admiralty to take up the Navy as a career. Men between the in th© Naval Reserve and are willing to become naval officers can be transferred to the regular list. Naval Reserve lieutenants Who transfer will become lieutenants, R.N., with pay of 13s 6d a day, then 15s 4d a day at 28, or after four years’ service, whichever is earlier,.

Outfit allowance will be £3O, and officers will retire at 45, with retired pay of £250 or more a year after 15 years’ service, with a maximum of £358 a year.
