ANNUAL POPPY DAY APPEAL OVER £1,200 COLLECTED IN DUKEOIH INCREASE ON LAST YEAR’S FIGURES Despite the cold end rain yesterday ue annual Poppy Day appeal or too Uuuetlin Returned Soldiers’ Asse-;.a uon brought a very gratifying public response, the amount collected aimu'.: the day totalling £1,236 5s Id, widen is nearly £IOO in excess of the total for tbb city, last year. Commencing at 7 a.m., the appeal was continued till 7 p.m., a large army of enthusiastic lady helpers braving tnc elements throughout the day. The response of tho general public was ready and generous, and there were few per sons, young or old, who were not wearing a poppy before the collectors ceased their efforts for the day. It is also reported that there was a brisk demand for poppies throughout the country districts, from which the returns have yet to come. The organiser (Mr O. L. Fer«ns) stated this morn_ ing that the association was gratified with the fine response by the public in assisting the R.S.A. to do something for the disabled men, for whoso benefit the money, will be expended during the year.
