RADIO FROM AKAROA.

A radio message has been received that the Akaroa expects to arrive at Auckland at 7 a.m. to-morrow*

VETERAN SHIPMASTER DEAD. The death occurred last month in London, at the age of 86, of Captain T. S. Angus, one of the best known of the old-time commanders in the P. and O. service, . and in his later years a keen and prominent yachtsman. Born at Inverkeithing in 1851, he studied at Leith Nautical College, and in 1866 was apprenticed to P. Henderson and Co., Glasgow. . He served in their sailing ships Wild Deer and Peter Denny, which traded regularly to New Zealand, and after gaining his first mate’s certificate in both sail and steam he joined the P. and O. Company in 1875, and remained with them for 47 years. Ho started as fifth officer, and a year after obtaining his master’s ticket in 1881 he was made chief officer of the Lombardy. Five years later, when in the Clyde, he lost his right hand as a result of an injury from a swinging anchor, but; it did not affect his career. His first command came in 1889, when he was given the Canton, and after some two years in her he spent a period ashore superintending the building of P. and O. liners at Middlesbrough, Barrow, and Greenock. On returning to sea he commanded in turn the Ballarat, Britannia, China, and Macedonia, coming ashore again in 1904 as nautical inspector at the London office, a position from which he retired in 1922. Captain Angus, besides having been a Younger Brother of Trinity House since 1904, was seamanship examiner of the Worcester cadets from 1906 to 1926, a member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, and of its court from 1930 to 1936. and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. LONDON’S SHIPPING. During the week ended March 5 1,024 vessels, representing 939,398 net register tons, used the Port of London. Of these. 476 vessels (725,237 net register tons) were to and from Empire and foreign ports, and 548 vessels (214,161 net register tons) were engaged in coastwise traffic. The arrivals included four meat cargoes—one from Australia, one from New Zealand, and two from South America—comprising 252,000 carcasses of Jamb and mutton, 80,000 packages of beef,_ quantities of pork, rabbits, and sundries. ALLER FROM SYDNEY. Advice has been received that the German steamer Aller will leave Sydney on May 1 for Lyttelton, where she is due on the 4th or sth. After loading there she will go to Dunedin for further loading, and will leave there on May 8 for the Continent. INTERISLAND EXPRESS. The interisland express , steamer Wahine arrived at Lyttelton from Wellington at 6.45 a.m. this morning. Passengers and mails for the south connected with the express. IN RADIO RANGE.
