THE SCRIMGEOUR OUTBURST
RECENT ATTACK ON PRESS POSITION OF GOVERNMENT BROADCASTING MINISTER MAKING INQUIRIES The Government has not yet given consideration to the question of the attack made on the Press through the “ Friendly Road ” broadcasting station by the Rev. C. G. Scrimgeour, Director of Commercial Broadcasting said the Postmaster-General (Hon. F. Jones). Mr Jones, who is at present Acting Minister-in-Charge of Broadcasting in the absence of the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. M. J. Savage), stated that full inquiries would be made into the position. This statement was a reply to questions as to what _ extent, if any, the Government associated itself with Mr Scrimgeour’s remarks, whether it approved of the use of Government stations for the purpose of making such remarks, and whether it considered that a public servant had the right to launch an attack of the kind. Mr Jones said that as he had only recently taken temporary charge of the department he had not yet had an opportunity of making a thorough examination of the regulations governing commercial stations. The matter, he knew, had not yet been considered by the Government, but he gave an assurance that full inquiries would be made.
