“AT HOME" ON BOARD H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA
At the invitation of Captain Acland and the officers of H.M.A.S. Australia, some 200 guests attended a delightful 5 o’clock party on the warship yesterday afternoon. The guests were received on the quarterdeck, which was covered in by awnings and turned into a spacious reception rooin, decorated in true naval fashion with bunting. Coloured electric lights and bowls of lovely flowers further added to its attractiveness. Here cocktails and the most intriguing savouries were served, and parties were shown over the ship by their hosts. Delightful musical selections were played by the ship’s band, and at sunset, when the ensign was lowered while the bugler played 1 Sunset,’ the officers stood at attention, and the visitors had just some little experience of what naval discipline means and what these traditions stand for. Among those invited were representatives from the R.N.V.R. (Commander and Mrs F. Fraser), the military (Lieut.-col. and Mrs S. Scoular), Mr Justice Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy, the mavor and mayoress (the Rev. and Mrs K. T. Cox), and members of the City Council, the Mayor and Mayoress of Port Chalmers (Mr and Mrs T. Scollay), the president of the Navy League (Mr Sutherland Ross) and Mrs Ross, representatives of the Harbour Board and other local bodies.
