COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING The Peninsula County Council held its monthly meeting at Portobello yesterday. Present were Cr H. Macandraw (chairman), and Crs J. Cross, VV. D. Stewart, J. T. Irvine, T. S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon, J. Hellyer, and J. W. Harbrow. CORRES PONDENCE, Pointing out that it was at present impossible to proceed with the erection of the building, Mr J. O. Thomson, Dunedin, asked the council to repair one of the roads leading to a section that he had purchased at Vauxhall for building purposes.—Referred to the chairman, the engineer, and Cr Hellyer with power to act “ It is an absolute scandal the way the roads are kept,” wrote Mr L. (4. Penfold, Waverley, referring to the roads in his district, notably Larnach and Shannon roads. The complainant said that he intended to send photographs of the roads after rain to the council for its perusal.—Referred to the local member and the engineer for attention. The treasurer of the ‘ Wheel of Fortune ’ art union forwarded a cheque for £l6 to_ be used for the general relief of distress at Portobello.—Received. Because, of the damage to a bank caused by wandering cattle, Mr H. Forsyth, Otakou, asked the council to erect a fence to protect plants and creepers that were being grown by him to improve the amenities of the locality. —lt was resolved to erect the fence, subject to the engineer’s approval. • Au application for the solo right to occupy the portion of land on which his cottage was erected at Wickliffe Bay was received from Mr George Walters. Musselburgh.—The application was approved, subject to the payment of an additional rental of £1 per annum. The district engineer of the Public Works Department (Mr P. Keller) wrote on behalf of Mr P. X. Kinnaird, Portobello, who had complained of the state of the road lending to his residence. The complainant had pointed out that the road had not been, attended to for six years, and akked whether the council could utilise relief workers to carry out the necessary repairs.—The meeting decided to make an application for, a Government grant. Seven ratepayers ’of Pukehiki requested the council to cut back the lupines on the sand road, and also to repair the bridge at the bottom of Paradise road.—Referred to the engineer for attention The attention of the council was drawn to the very unsatisfactory state of the Ross Crescent road by Miss F. J. Ross, Broad Ray.—Referred to the engineer for attention. The dangerous state of Buceleugh Terrace was the subject of a complaint from Mr J. R. Kean, Vauxhall, who stated that it had been left unfinished since last November. The writer mentioned .that there was a 6ft_6in drop approximately a yard from his gate.— It was decided to erect a protecting rail outside the gate. Stating that considerable damage was being done to portion of their propertv owing to the damming of water, Messrs J. and J. E. Dick, Portobello. asked the council whether it or a neighbour was responsible for the cleaning of a blocked drain that was causing., the damage.—The council resolved to attend to the drain after the portion between the beach and Taimate Point had been cleaned out. The attention of the council was drawn to the .very unsatisfactory condition of the Ross Crescent road and Glen road by Miss F. J. Ross. Broad Bay, who wrote that; especially after heavy rain, these roads were unsafe both for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.—Referred to the engineer for attention. GENERAL. The council approved of the installation of four street lights at Macaridrew Bay in accordance with the request of the North-east Harbour Ratepayers’ Association, the city electrical engineer being instructed to proceed with the work as soon as possible. In accordance with the requirements of the Valuation and Land Act, Mr Alexander Porterfield, of Macandrew Bay, was appointed assessor for the council. The County Clerk (Mr R. Seaton) reported that for the monthly period ended April 8, a building permit for the erection of a garage, valued at £3O, had been issued to Mrs B. C. Gooch, Broad Bay The County Ranger (Mr E. Campbell) reported that he had found seven cattle wandering in the Otakou district during the past month. COUNTY FINANCES. The financial statement for the month ended yesterday detailed, the following riding balances:—Otago Heads, £2l 3s 8d (debit) ; Sandymount. £67 14s od (credit); Highcliff, £237 12s lid (credit); Tomahawk, £22 3s 6d (credit); North-east. Harbour, £7 13s (debit); Broad Bay, £IQ4 8s 7d (debit); Portobello, £177 18s 2d (debit). Amounts due to the. council totalled £1,056, consisting of arrears in rates (£590) and the highways and grants subsidy (£466). The statement was received. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Work carried out in the county during March was reported on to the council by.'the engineer (Mr .S. G. Paterson) as follows ; Portobello Riding.—The cleaning of watcrtables and general surface work had been done on the main road. Further maintenance metal was spread on this road. Shoulders had been cut on School road (Hooper’s Inlet). Portohello-Cape Saunders road, and Hooper’s Inlet road. The road widening on the Portohello-Cape Saunders road was nearing completion, and would be finished during the present month. Broad Bay Hiding.—Three yard? of meta! were spread on the foot of the Camp road. A broken pipe culverlt on the upper end of this road, was being replaced. Nine yards of broken metal had been , spread on Roebuck Rise, Broad Bay. The shoulders had been trimmed on the Portobello township roads. North-east Harbour Hiding.—Surfacing work was done to Macandrew street, Dickson street, and District road. The surface of Marne street (Vauxhall) had been trimmed by the grader. Highcliff Riding.—A steep corner on the Tomahawk Main road was eased, ami metal spread to cover the formation. Grader.—The grader had been employed on Tomahawk Highway, High road, Portobello-Otakou road. ' On the Portobello township roads, Marne street, Hooper's Inlet School road, Portohello-Cape Saunders road, and the Hooper’s Inlet road the shoulders were trimnmd.' The material was being removed.
