PIONEER WOMEN
TO BE HONOURED AT CENTENARY The notice of the public is directed to a meeting of men and women to be held in the Concert Chamber, as advertised in our columns, to hear in what way the various women’s organisations in Dunedin and surrounding districts have decided to honour their pioneer women at the time of the centenary celebrations in 1940. About 40 women’s organisations are comprised in this Women’s Centennial Council. For some months past meetings of this council have been held to ascertain what form of memorial would meet with the most general approval. All the organisations are engaged in valuable civic work, and they felt that they could not allow the first century of the settlement of New Zealand to pass, without showing in some tangible form their recognition of the fine spirit of their , pioneer women. They recognise that it was the_ character of their pioneers that laid the solid foundations of the -Otago district, and that the women took an equal share with the men in building up the material success of many of Otago’s early settlers. For that reason they particularly invite the men to help them to make their memorial worthy of their own forbears..
