RUGBY

TASERI CLUB Mr W. P. Hartslonge, the retiring president, was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Taieri Football Club. There was a large attendance of players and supporters. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, said that the balance at the end of the year was £3 8s 7d less than at the commencement. During the year, however, a net expenditure of £l2 9s 2d was incurred on' new lights for the recreation ground, and as this was a non-recurring item, the financial position had really improved during the year. The club appreciated the services of Mr C. G. Gibbons as coach to the senior team during the year. His enthusiasm _ and knowledge of the game had assisted very much in bringing about regular and satisfactory practices, and as a result of his work a considerable improvement had been noted in the football of the senior team. Messrs E. R. Pearce and George Grieve had done good work with the second and third grade teams, despite the handicap of having their teams drawn upon to fill vacancies in higher grades. In addition, Mr Stevenson was to be congratulated on the fine work achieved with the fifth grade team. The visit of the Invercargill Club on Easter Saturday was a great success, and the committee was most anxious that a return visit to Invercargill should he paid by the club this year. In order to assist the coach ami the team in its training, two additional lights were erected in the recreation ground at a cost of £2O 9s 2d._ A grant of £8 towards this expenditure was received from the Otago Rugby Football Union. These lights now make the ground one of the best-lighted football fields in the Dunedin district, and must prove of great assistance to the teams in their training. He was pleased to report that a successful season had again been held, and while the senior team lost more games than it won, it had played tho_ right _ typo of football, and the policy which was commenced in the previous season of bringing on the younger players from the lower grades had been continued to tho advantage of the players and the class of football played. The second and third grade teams performed quite well in their respective grades. Tho fifth grade had an outstanding season, losing only one match, and playing excellent football. In seconding the motion, Mr R. T. Kirk said that the successful and pleasant year had been due to the energies of the president. Tho following office-bearers were elected: —President, Mr W. P. Hartstonge; senior vice-president, Mr R. T. Kirk; secretary, Mr W. Campbell; assistant secretary, Mr B. A. Quelch; treasurer, Mr M'Ounn; captain, Mr W. Davis; selectors—Messrs W. Davis, C. Gibbons, and J. Renton; committee—Messrs J. F. M'Cartney, E. Nichol, J, Renton, J. Mini-head, and G. Broadley; auditor, Mr Allan Mitchell; delegates to the O.R.F.U.— Messrs E. Nichol, J. Muirhead, and C. Gibbons. Last year’s vice-presidents were re-elected with seven additions. Tho subscription was fixed at 7s 6d for first and second grades; 5s for third grade, and 3s for fourth and fifth grades. The honorary members’ subscription was fixed at ss. In answer to a question, the Chairman said the committee had under consideration the need of a better playing area than No. 2 ground. It was decided to commence practice on March 13, and to send a team to Invercargill at Easter.
