MIDNIGHT FIRE
SUNDAY SCHOOL DESTROYED, CHURCH DAMAGED j Fire destroyed the Sunday school hall attached to the Church of Christ, North road, North-east Valley, last night, and hadly damaged the church. The church is a wooden hvilding with a brick front, with an anteroom and Sunday school hall attached. The fire was first seen by a taxi driver, who gave' the alarm at 12.45 a.m., and .when the brigade arrived the building was blazing fiercely. A good water supply was available, however, and the firemen made a good save. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. It was impossible at once to assess the damage, but for the past 18 months members of the congregation had been renovating and modernising the building, the work having been completed about 9 o’clock last night. There was only a small insurance on the building, and the loss will be a considerable amount, as the organ has been destroyed. From appearances it seemed as though the fire commenced in a corner near the organ and then spread to the rest of the building. CHIMNEY FIRE. At 5.5 p.m. yesterday the City Brigade dealt with a chimney fire in Glen road.
