PROPOSED BAN ON PRIVATE CADDIES VERDICT OF ROYAL AND ANCIENT CLUB Presi Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, March 12. The Royal and Ancient Club rejected the proposed ban on the employment of private caddies in major tournaments and the payment of big fees. The proposal was made _by the Professional Golfers’ Association “ because there are many abuses in the present system.” ' .. The association suggested that caddies should be allocated by lot, with a fee of 10s a day. The Royal and Ancient Club decided that the allocation of caddies was the business of the club’ at which the championship was played. The proposed ban aroused a storm of protest. Padgham and Cotton declared that if they were deprived of their personal caddies they would either stay away from tournaments or carry light bags of clubs themselves. _ Meanwhile the Professional Golfers’ Association is considering other means to prevent golfers from being “ victimised by unscrupulous caddies demanding exorbitant fees.”
