"LA MARECHALE" ACCORDED CIVIC RECEPTION Mrs Catherine Booth-Clibborn, eldest daughter of the late General William Booth (founder of the Salvation Army) and sister of General Eva Booth, was accorded a civic reception in the Council Chambers this morning. Better 1 known as “ The Marechale ’ she has had an exciting life and at times this intrepid leader had to have police pro* tection when holding meetings in Pans, In welcoming Mrs Booth-Clibborn, the Mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) said “ The Marechale’ was the French term for “field marshal.” Ho expressed his own delight, as well as that of those present, at having the privilege of meeting such a famous and renowned, personage, who, for a quarter of a century was the national leader of a f -eater religious organisation in ranee. The, mayor concluded by hoping her stay would be happy for herself, as well as helpful to the spiritual life of the community. The Rev. Thomas Miller (representing the Christian Evangelical Bible League) welcomed c ‘The Marechale on her first visit to New Zealand in the course of a world tour. In the gallery of famous men of this century, outstanding was that of William Booth, whoso jgreat work had stayed the names of revolution and insurrection. Mrs Booth-Clibborn’s own work had been responsible for converting numerous liabilities into invaluable assets. Other speakers were Mrs Brigadier Gray, on behalf of the Salvation Army, and the Rev. W. A. Hamblett, representing the Council of Christian Congregations. Mrs Booth-Clibborn appreciated the welcome given her. She delivered a vigorous address, speaking fluently and appealing to all to make her mission a success. The task of converting people to the Gospel of Jesus Christ was a gigantic one. During her travels, on the Continent she had come into contact with many people, and had found Socialists and anarchists among the most friendly. Her other experiences in her travel* were dealt with, and she concluded hf thanking all for their hearty and sin< cere welcome. -
