OAMARU MEAT SUPPLY.
TO TEE EDITOR.
Sir, —At the February 4 meeting of the Borough Council the mayor trounced and castigated Cr White for not having earlier informed the council about the large number of old cows being slaughtered at the abattoirs. Was this warranted when one realises that Cr White visited the abattoirs on Wednesday, January 20, and reported to the council on January 21? Did not the mayor blunder? Will he apologise to Cr White on Thursday night? But what of the statement made by the councillor named, that on the day he paid his visit (January 20) there were two steers, two heifers, and seven old cows in the pens for slaughter? Will someone in authority show that this preponderance of “ old cows ” did not find their way into the butchers’ shops, and were not turned into soap or manure? —I am, etc., I. Stew. February 18.
