SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[Fecit Oue Balclutha Coreespoxdext. ] . Cricket. —Owing to the postponement of fixtures last Saturday on account of the inclement weather, a fresh draw has been necessary in the B grade competition. This has been made as follows;—February 20: Owaka v. Milton B, at Milton; Lawrence v. Benhar, at Benhar. February 27: Milton B v. Lawrence, at Lawrence; Owaka v. Benhar. March 6: Milton Bv. Benhar, at Benhar; Owaka v. Lawrence, ground to be arranged. The only A grade fixture this coming Saturday will be the final for the Stewart Shield between Milton and Balclutha, to be played on the Balclutha ground. Given a fine day, a very interesting match should result. Freezing Works.—Up till yesterday (Tuesday) the number of sheep and iambs killed at the South Otago freezing works was 82,956. This number shows a decrease on the number at the same period last season of about 5,900. The number of cattle killed so far is 562, a decrease of some 500 on the number at the corresponding period last year.; “Milk” lambs are now becoming scarce, and the usual lull before the “ feed ” lambs come in is being experienced at the works, although bookings for the present week are quite satisfactory. The Weather. —Very rough and wintry weather has been experienced throughout South Otago these last few days. Strong southerly winds, accompanied by cold showers, have been the v rule, and considerable damage has been done to orchards and standing crops_ as a result. Haymaking and harvesting have been brought to a standstill, and the cold snap has also had an adverse effect on the lambs in the district.

Although most of the streams in the district are rather high for fishing, the Glenoxnaru Stream is providing good sport. A Balclutha angler, accompanied by a friend from Dunedin, secured good baskets in this stream both last week and again yesterday. They report, however, that the Owaka and Gatlin* Streams are too high for fishing. In connection with the proposed cutting up of the Otago High School’* endowment at Mokoreta, at present leased to Mr J. 0. Begg, Mr A. Rodger, of the Lands Department, had a conference at Clinton on Saturday, with representatives of settlers at Clinton and Mokoreta who favour sub-division. Messrs D. M'Dougall and J. A. Roy, M.P.s for the districts concerned, were present, as. was Mr D. T. Fleming, representing the High Schools Board. The run comprises some 27(000 acres of clear land, and is at present carrying . 9,000 head of sheep and between 200 and 300 head of cattle. _ The local representatives favour sub-division into' five blocks, three on the Clinton side and two on the Mokoreta side, while the Lands Department representative favours only one on the latter side—four in all. This matter was brought before Mr Fraser when he visited the . district a few weeks ago. At a statutory meeting of shareholders of the recently-formed South Otago Newspapers Limited, held last night, Messrs D. M. Henderson. W. S. Thomson, P. L. Nicolsou, A, E. Russell, and J. R. M'Naughton" were • elected to the directorate, Mr Henderson being appointed chairman at a subsequent meeting. Prior to leaving Waitahuna to taka over the charge of the Hampden Presbyterian Church, Rev. A. R. Chisholm and Mrs Chisholm, and family were entertained at a farewell function, which was largely attended. Mr W. Cameron, on behalf of the congregation, asked Mr Chisholm to accept a roll of notes, while presentations were also made from the Bible class and Sunday school. Mrs Chisholm was the recipient of gifts from the P.W.M.TJ, and Women’s Institute, while presentations were also made to Miss Mary and Master George Chisholm. General regret was expressed at the departure of the minister and his family, and best wishes extended for their future welfare.. The gifts were suitably acknowledged by Mr and Mrs Chisholm, who said their term in Waitahuna had been most pleasant.
