OTAGO CROQUET

EIGHTH ANNUAL TOURNAMENT The Otago tourney was opened this morning on the association lawns at Logan Park. Mrs J. G. Briggs (president of the Otago Association), in her opening remarks, welcomed the large number of competitors, and especially mentioned the visitors from other centres, whose presence always gave greater interest to' the events. A cheery gleam of sunshine, which, she said, was also very welcome, shone through and made the scene a very attractive one. She thanked those responsible for the condition of the lawns, which were in excellent order, considering the wet season. Tho managemnet is in the hands of Mrs J. M'Donald, with Mrs Nisbet.as assistant. Mrs Briggs called on the mayor (Rev, E. T. Cox) to formally open the tournament, which he did in happy vein. Otago players, he said, seemed to be quite unaffected by weather, and he wished them every success for the tourney. Mrs Cox then made the first hoop of the 1937 tourney. A telegram of congratulation was received from the South Canterbury Association and a letter of congratulation from Mrs A. S. Dalgliesh (a former president of the Otago Association). Play was then commenced on the seven"lawns at Logan Park and the four lawns at Watea. Tire following are the results of the morning’s play:—« HANDICAP DOUBLES. A GRADE. Mesdames Allen arid Rigby (Punga) beat Mrs Milliu and J. Tannoek (Opoho), 26-19. Mesdames Gillanders and Anderson <Watea) beat Mesdames Pettigrew fGore) and Robertson (Invercargill), 26-13. Alesdames Buckler and Halstead 1 Punga) beat Mesdames Christopher and Gibson (Watea), 26-13. Mesdames Beck (L.P.) and Moloney /St. Clair) heat Mrs Halliday and Miss Meo (Watea), 26-14. B GRADE. Mesdames Pickering and Jenkins (Cav.) beat Mesdames Moss (Montecillo) and Haig (Punga), 26-24. Mrs Knox and Miss Rhodes (Watea) heat Mesdames Flynn (L.P.) and Lee (Teinuka), 26-9. /
