COURSING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Plumptom.]

The South Otago Coursing Club will hold its opening meeting of the season on March 6. This meeting will be held on the club’s new plunipton, which was opened last year. During the off season the club members have worked hard on the plumpton, and it is very pleasing to note that their efforts have not been in vain. The enclosure is in excellent condition, and with the hares the club now have, it should this year have another very successful season. The North Otago Club intends to hold its opening meeting of the new season on March and 29. _ Iho mam stake to be decided at this meeting carries with' it a guarantee of £25 to the winner. Last, season this stake drew an entry of 25, the winning owner received £3O, the rnnner-up £/ IDs. while the owners of the two dogs beaten in the , seini-final received £2 each. The winner of this event last vear was B. Currie’s Gay Blonde (Why ’Worry—Gay’ Parade), the runner-up was J. Benson’s Royal Fleet (Electric Blue —Quickstep), while the two dogs beaten in, the semi-final were R. Dowling’s Native Chief (White Chief — Wilga) and Evans and Kidd’s Invader (Lupin—Dorado). B. Currie, of Dunedin, is taking his two dogs. Gay Blonde and Dad’s Worry, to compete at the South Otago Club’s meeting, after which he intends to' take them to the North Otago Club’s fixture. The maiden, Dad’s Worry (Why Worry—Gay Parade), raced in the O’Dell-Wise Cup stake last season and was beaten in the semi-final by Desert Chimes, who divided the stake with his litter brother, Desert Storm. During the oft season Dad’s Worry has filled out and is a much better developed dog than last season. She is fast, and when at' the top of her form will take a lot of beating. _ She is verv forward at present, and if raced in the maiden at Balclutha should prove the winner. Gay Blonde is also well forward, and appears to be a little faster than last season. She is a very clever worker, and if the hares stop out for any length of time she may finish in.the money.

M. fsullivan has been working very hard on his yet unnamed pup by Direct Action —Princess Wilga. This pup is young, but well developed. He intends to race her at Balclutha on March 6. She is in good fettle, but will need more time before she can be expected to give of her best.; The education she will receive by being raced on the Balclutha plumpton should be beneficial to one so young.

G. Smart’s Desert Chimes and Desert Storm are by Desert (Blue—Chiming Bells. A litter brother in Sandy Desert also took, part in .the O’Dell Wise Cup stake,' being beaten in the second round by Dad’s Worry.

T. 'M'Dowell was very unlucky to lose that very promising young bitch, Bev’s Worry ■f-Why Worry —Gay - Parade). He was out exercising his last week, and when crossing a paddock a rabbit rose up and Bev’s Worry go loose and raced after it.. The rabbit made , for a burrow, and the dog drove forward to make the kill, when it caught its head in the burrow, and, turning over, broke its neck. Mr M'Dowell, who first took up coursing as an owner last year, when he purchased Bev’s Worry and Lea’s Worry, won, with the latter at the first meeting in : which she appeared, this being the North Otago Easter meeting in 1936... At this meeting he started Bev’s Worry in the All-aged Stake, vyon by Gay Blonde. Bev’s Worry was beaten in the second round by J. Perkins’s Sage Prince (Aromet —Purple Sage), having won in the first round by an accidental bye. He started Lea’s Worry in the £2 limit stake on the first day, and she was beaten in the first round by J, Benson’s Even Money (Even Lad— Electric Alma), Even Money being beaten in the semi-fttial by the ultimate winner, Sage Queen (Aromet —Purple Sage), owned by J. Perkins. On the second day of the meeting both Bev’s Worry and Lea’s Worry were started in the £2 limit supplementary stake, the former being beaten in the first round by C. H. Hilton’s Limes Elect (Blue Limes—Brown Pearl), who was beaten in the second round by Lea’s Worry. The latter went on to beat A. Rennie’s Even Laddie (Even Lad— Electric Alma) in the semi-final, and A. J. Wilson’s Romantic (Electric Hope —Quizzie) in the final. Mr_ M'Dowell finished up the season by winning the Keith Cup at the South Otago Club’s meeting, nis successful candidate again being Lea’s Worry, who won the final from James Gold’s Pot Luck (Why Worry—Gay Parade).
