VESSEL IN DISTRESS
A CALL FOR HELP CARRYING PHOSPHATES FROM OCEAN ISLAND PreM iMociation— By Telegraph—Copyright BRISBANE, February 15. (Received February 15, at 11 a.m.) SOS calls have been received from the steamer Shousing (4,920 tons), which is believed to be drifting helplessly with a broken rudder in a cyclone 700 or 800 miles east of Cairns. It is 'beiiteved to be north of Bamptonl Reef, beyond Willis Island. Several vessels, including the steamers Nell ore and China Exporter, are hurrying to its assistance. The Shousing is bound from Ocean Island to Melbourne carrying a full cargo of phosphates. The vessel has a Chinese crew of 40 and Japanese officers, commanded by Captain Kasalo. The Shousing was formerly known as Pauline Sdaylina. Strabaand, and Vega (four different names), and is owned by Japanese interests in China. The present agents for the vessel are the British Phosphate Commission.
