‘—Ministerial.—■ The Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) and the Minister of Mine* (Hon. P. C. Webb) travelled to Stewart Island on Saturday to spend the weekend there. They will return to-morrow, and will make tours of inspection and hear deputations at Invercargill. On Wednesday they will visit the Hornet tunnel. His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy left this morning for Invercargill to preside over the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court, commencing there tomorrow. Mr A. C. Hanlon, K.C., left by the express this morning for Invercargill. Mr P. Neilson, M.P., Mr J. W*Miinro, M.P., and Dr M'Millan, M.P., left this morning for Wellington. Mr J. G. Alexander, city engineer, and Mr R. J. Comrie, of the city engineer’s staff, left this morning to attend the twenty-third annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, commencing at Canterbury College, Christchurch, to-morrow morning. Mr J. M‘G. Wilkie, engineer o{ the Otago Harbour Board, and Mr A. C. Swanson, a member of his staff, will also attend the meeting. Major-general Sir John Davidson, a director of Messrs Dalgety and Co. and a member of the directorate and chair-man-designate of the Union Bank of Australia, is at present visiting Dunedin and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Sir John, .who is accompanied by Lady Davidson, is on a business tour of Australia and New Zealand. He will leave for the north to-morrow. Mr C. Stanley Smith left for Mount * Cook yesterday to attend the annual conference of. the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. Sir Robert Muir, F.R.S., of Glasgow, who arrived in Christchurch yesterday and went on to the Hermitage to-day, is a noted scientist and scholar. He has had a great and distinguished career. At 20 years of age he graduated M.A. from Edinburgh University, and in 1890, with a gold, medal thesis, obtained the degree ot doctor of medicine. He was lecturer on pathological bacteriology at Edinburgh University in 1894, and professor of pathology at the University of St. Andrew’s from 1898-1899. The Royal Society awarded him its Royal Medal in 1929, he was knighted in 1934, and won the Lister Medal for 1936. From 1899 to 1936 he was professor of pathology at the University of Glasgow. He is also the author of a number of medical books and scientific treatises. After visiting Dunedin Sir Robert will return to Christchurch on Saturday next, leaving for Wellington the same evening.
