CONCILIATION COUNCIL

CABLE TRAMWAY WORKERS An industrial dispute between the Cable Tramway Employees’ Industrial Union (applicants) and the Dunedin City Council and the Kaikorai Tramway Company Ltd. (respondents) was heard before a sitting of the Conciliation Council yesterday. The Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) presided, the assessors for the employees being Messrs William Jenkins, William Millar, David MTherson, and W. W. Batchelor (secretary), the employers’ representatives being Messrs M, Silverstone, J. A. Paterson, F. W. Mitchell, and A. b. Cookson. , , , The hours of work were used at a week, although the daily woiking time could not be agreed upon. The wages fixed were:—First three months, 2s 0 3-5 d an hour; next nine months, 2s 1 4-sd; second year’s service, 2s 1 4-sd; third year’s service, 2s 3d. Gripmen: First year, 2s 3d an Four; second year, 2s 3d; third year, 2s 4 4-sd. Linesmen, 2s 4 1-od; assistant linesmen, 2s 23d; ropeman, 2s 4 l : 5d; car examiners, 2s 2|d. The award is to be for one year, with a provision tor the parties to have the wages reviewed on March 31, 1937, the end of the city’s financial year. ELECTRICIAN’S DISPUTE The adjourned sitting of the general electricians’ industrial dispute was also held yesterday. A settlement was reached upon all the terms and conditions with the exception of the question of exemptions and the date of coming into operation of the award, which were left to the court. Mr J. Veitch submitted arguments for exemption on behalf of .the Power Board, and Mr K. Cockburn stated the case for the Power Board workers. The council decided to hold over for the Arbitration Court the final decision as to whether these parties should bo included in the award.
