BALCLUTHA WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
The first meeting of tho Balclutlia Women’s Institute took the form of a garden party, held at the residence of Mrs J. R. Copland, The weather was all that could be desired, and the grounds looked particularly well, so that the members present spent a very happy time in congenial surroundings. Proceedings opened with the ode and creed, Mrs J. D, Landels presiding. The motto was “ A cheerful heart is like a sunny day—good for everybody.” Nominations for officers and committee for the ensuing year were received. The annual meeting was fixed for March 9, when the elections will take place. At this meeting the social adjournment will take the form of “An English Afternoon,” and the demonstration will probably be on marquetry. A very nice afternoon tea, provided by the members, was dispensed, after which those present indulged in several competitions, including a “ lucky spot ” on the lawn, this being won by Mrs M. Low. Games .indulged in were “hitting the peg,” “ crazy croquet,” and others, all participants greatly enjoying the outdoor play in such pleasant surroundings. Before concluding a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Copland for placing her grounds at the disposal of the institute. Mrs Copland, in the course of her reply, expressed the hope that the gathering would become an annual one,
