COUNTRY CRICKET WEEK

MATCHES AT LOGAN PARK SOUTHLAND V. SOUTH OTAGO The country cricket week instituted by the Otngo Cricket Association was begun at Logan Park this morning in ideal weather on good wickets, Southland meeting South Otago on the University Oval and Central Ofago being pitted against a town team on the main ground. Southland had first use of the wicket on the University Oval against South Otago, the opening pair being Tapley and King. The attack was entrusted to. Nimmo (the former Carisbrook fast bowler) and Parker. Tapley set about the bowling from the start and quickly ran to double figures. He was batting well when Parker got one past him, the score reading 21—1—14. Scandrett (who represented Otago in the Piunket Shield games last season) joined King, who had only 4 on when he played a a ball from Nimmo to mid-off. He called for a short run, and when Uttley did not come on King had no chance of' regaining his crease. 27—2—4. Uttley then became associated with the left-hander in a bright partnership which took the score to 75. Scandrett batted very nicely, getting his runs with hard, clean strokes on both sides of the wicket and making some nice shots to backward point. Uttley hit hard and got most of his runs in front of the wicket, also showing good defence. Scandrett tried to cut a ball from Parker which came back a little and he was bowled. Scandrett’s 26 included three 4‘s.

Derbie partnered Uttley, and the newcomer began a little uncertainly, being inclined to nibble at the ball pitched outside the off stump. Once into his stride, however, Derbie batted' fairly soundly, but he lost Uttley With the score at 100, the latter chopping one from Nimmo on to his wickets. He made 28 by quite bright batting. Nimmo, who was whipping them down with considerable pace, had further success a little later, Derbie being caught by Parker in the slips. 112—5 23. Esple, a slow left-hander, who flighted the ball cleverly, came on in place of Parker and claimed a wicket in his first oyer. Patrick and Macara were associated, and the former began with a powerful off-drive to the boundary. Espie had his revenge in the same over, Patrick playing all over a slower one. 117—6—4. M'Kenzie and Macara were together in a good stand and both drove hard, runs coming fairly quickly. Parker relieved Espie and the change proved effective, the slow-medium bowler bringing about Macara’s dismissal Ibw. 169 —7—29. Dunnet joined M'Kenzie, who was playing a very attractive knock, and revealing a good range of scoring strokes. The incomer did not get go r ing and was well beaten by Nimmo with one the batsman scarcely saw. 182— B—7. Mackenzie (29) and Carswell (10) were together when the luncheon adjournment was taken with 190 runs showing for the loss of eight wickets. Details:— ■

MATCH WITH CENTRAL OTAGO. A respectable total of 161 for seven wickets had been made by the home side at the lupcheon adjournment in the match between a town team and Central Otago at the main ground at Logan Park. J. H. Don Miller was the most prolific contributor, his 67 not out being smartly compiled. Except for 37 made by Uttley, none of the other batsmen were in scoring mood.
