FORTY-HOUR WEEK

POSITION OF SHOP ASSISTANTS GR BATCHELOR ASKS FOR CO-OPERATION When the Finance Committee’s recommendation involving the extension of the privilege of the five-day working week to the office staff in the Town Hall offices was under discussion last night Cr Batchelor asked the chairman of the committee for assistance in bringing about the five-day week to shop assistants. Cr Batchelor suggested that the Town Hall employees should be advised not to do their shopping on Saturday and he asked the chairman for his assurance that this would be done. The workers in the shops wanted a 40-hour week, and he wanted to see it made easier for them to get it. If the employees would not eo-operate they would nave to consider reverting to the old hours. Cr, Munro: That is a threat. Cr Batchelor: I believe in threats sometimes.

The Mayor ventured the opinion that the people would have to be provided with the means to keep their food fresh over the week-end. If Cr Batchelor could get over that difficulty he could see no reason against the closing of shops on Saturday mornings. The matter was not considered further.
