RIFLE SHOOTING

/ KIWI DEFENCE CLUB On Saturday the second competition of No. 2 match was fired on the hill range by the Kiwi Defence Rifle Club, over the 500yds and 600yds ranges. The strong fishtail head wind and the rain that was experienced played havoc with most of the scores, and it so happened that .some of the leading scorers at the first range when shooting at the second range were near the bottom at that range. With a four for his second and eighth shots and the remainder bulls Rifleman W. Burt established an early success for the B grade, but Rifleman N. Jones was bent on retrieving the reputation of the A grade, and excitement was intense when he fired his last shot, for a bull would mean that he would get 49. A little puff of wind at the crucial moment, however, only allowed him to get a four, leaving Rifleman Burt as the best scorer at 500yds'. Another good shoot at this range was that obtained by Rifleman E. Kibblewhite. After a disastrous start he lost only two points in his last seven shots, and then, at the next, only two in his first five. He is just 15 years old, however, and he then faded away. Considering the weather, good scores were obtained at 600yds, and of these 47 by Rifleman W. Pullar and P. Fennessey were the best. Rifleman W. Pullar, by virtue of his stronger finish, had the honour of the best score at 600yds, making this the second success for the B grade during the day. By medium of Rifleman W. Pullar’s 91 the B grade obtained the best scratch score, thus making the day a triumph for that grade. Although he has been shooting solidly this is Rifleman W. Pullar’s first major success this season, and he is to be congratulated on his clear-cut victory, as he was two points ahead of the next man, Rifleman P. Fennessey. Interesting shooting will be seen on the next two Saturdays, when the riflemen, discarding such appliances and aids as slings and aperture sights, willfire the service match. The fallowing are the individual scores A GRADE.

DUNEDIN DEFENCE CLUB The Dunedin Defence Rifle Club shot the second competition for prizes presented by President W. Banuerman and Rifleman O. G. Miller on Saturday afternoon. There was an attendance of 18, and seven shots (two optional sighters) each were fired at 500yds and 600yds. Weather conditions were fair, except for a light drizzle late in the afternoon, but baffling wind and light made high scoring extremely difficult. Rifleman O. G. Miller was top at 500yds with 34 and Rifleman W. A. Graham at 600yds' with 32. Rifleman W. A. Graham headed the day’s aggregate with 65. , Following are the highest scores
