SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERTS.
TO THE EDITOR,
Sir,—Personally I am in favour of Sunday night concerts, as they tend to keep many of the young people off the streets on a Sunday night. My complaint is against those responsible for instituting a charge of one shilling for a seat in the circle at- the State Theatre. Last Sunday evening one or two friends, and myself decided to go to the concert in the State Theatre. Imagine our surprise on arriving to find the manager of the theatre standing inside the door shouting: “ Patrons are requested to contribute not less than sixpence. Pay a shilling and we will give you a good reserved seat in the circle. Roll up and support a worthy cause. (He omitted to state the cause until just before the conclusion of the concert.) Perhaps Mr Faraa will say people were allowed upstairs for sixpence, or perhaps he may be generous and say that threepence would have secured a circle seat. If so, can he explain why three young fellows who went in in front of ns were stopped at the foot of the stairs and asked for their tickets? Not being able to produce tickets, they were shown into the stalls, which appeared to be very nearly full, while we, having paid our shilling, were shown upstairs and provided with a good reserved seat. I understand that the council grants permits for these concerts under certain conditions, therefore why does it not see that holders of permits abide bv the conditions laid down ?—I am, etc., August 8.
[Mr Faina explains that he referred to “ those who contribute a shilling” and added, “there is no compulsion. Many who contributed smaller amounts were admitted to the circle.—Ed. E.S.]
