'ln dull weather a large crowd attended at Carlaw Park , for the hrst League test. ■ The teams were: f ENGLAND. Full-back, Belshaw; three-quarters— Edwards, Risman (captain), Erogden, Hudson; half-backs Watkins, Jenkins, forwards —Armitt, Field, oods, Mil ler, Hodgson, Troup. NEW ZEALAND. Full-back, Hemi; three-quarters— Scott, W. Tittleton, Brown (Auckland) : live-eighths, Tom Trevathen, Kay; half-back, Powell;; forwards— M'Neight (West Coast), Glynn (West Coast), Calder (West Coast), Cootes (Wellington), Pickrang _ (Auckland), JRfjitene (Auckland, captain). The referee was Mr P. Rogers, ‘After both sides had been photobraphed with the Courtney Shield, Watkins kicked off for England before m "large crowd. The playing field was ih'splendid order. The visitors rushed play to the Dominion’s twenty-fives, where they were penalised for.not " lowing New Zealand to piay the bail, afid Hemi kicked back to past halfway, where a scrum was ordered, from whicn England was penalised again. . The New Zealand backs then got into action, and passing by Brown, Kay, .Waten%, and Powell saw the latter cross the line, but play was recalled for a pass forward. The Dominion maintained a strong attack, and the crowd was disappointed when from a penalty in goaling range, Hemi kicked the ball up against the opposing forwards. He refused to shoot at goal from another award, and followed by making a poor attempt to pot a goal, and again missed with a penalty a few minutes later. Watene started a New .Zealand effort to' the right wing wiei* Tittleton, Brown, Kay, and Brown handling in that order, the winger being stopped near the' corner flag. Then England cleared, and Brogden made a great dash down the right wing, Scott stopping it after Troup and Hudson had handled.

Watkins, Jenkins, and Brogden were in England’s next attack, and Hemi stemmed the rush before the centre could get in his pass to Edwards. Hemi soon missed another penalty (by far his best shot) with a ball that was cutting all kinds of capers. After quarter of an hour’s play the ■coring account had not been opened. The New Zealand forwards so far had given a dashing display, and had forced the opposing backs into errors. England now began to get the ball from the scrums, but the New Zealand forwards continued their harrying tactics, and kept the visitors penned in their own twenty-five. • Brown was next conspicuous in clearing l an attack launched by Broaden, but England came back, and, Hudson made *: detbrniined effort to score, being well tickled -by Kay while he was in the act of cutting past Hemi. When Codtes was penalised coming round the ■ next scrum too quickly, Hodgson went close to goaling from a long kick. Watkins worked the blind side to Jenkins, but Scott held him. Another save was lucky when Watkins, after cutting a big hole in the defence,, threw a wild pass out to the left wing. As 1 Edwards went away in another ■olo effort Risman was penalised for obstructing Tittleton in getting to the English winger, and Hemi went very close with a beautiful kick. There were only a few minutes to go now till half-time. From a good bit of work by Pickrang and Brown, nearly every New Zealana- player handled the ball, but a magnificent rush eventually broke down near England’s line after crossing the field twice.

After a stoppage for an injury, Brogden got awav jnd ran behind New Zealand’s goaf, but the line umpire was 75 yards away indicating a breach. The referee took play hack amid English protestations, and from a penalty Watene again went close to a goal. Then at. last Hemi succeeded with a‘shot from fairly close range. Halftime : New Zealand ... ... ... 2 England ■' ... 0 "England went directly to the attack as soon as the second spell started, and good tackling by Scott stopped Hudson from scoring. After an exchange of kicks at long range Belshaw short-punted, and although the ball bounced nicely for him, with Hemi beaten, Edwards dropped \the i ; pass, and missed a certain try After play had veered to the opposite wing England scored from a set scrum, thi». : passing being from Watkins to Jenkins, then to Brogden, Risman. and Edwards for the last-named to complete a fine movement.
