HEAVY RAIN SQUALLS
NORTH OTAGO'S BAD WEEK-END MINOR DAMAGE IN COUNTRY DISTRICTS (L-'uon Ocr: Correspoxdext.J GAMA HU, Tuly C. A week of particularly changeable weather reached its climax yesterday with a howling north-westerly gale, which brought 'up rain squalls last night. The wind, apart from being unpleasantly cold, effected little damage in town, although numerous fences were shifted from the perpendicular, and a number of trees were blown down; but parts of the surrounding district were less fortunate, particularly in more exposed areas where the wind played havoc with fences, haystacks and small outhouses. The district of Ngapara and Otckaieke. were tire worst affected, and Five Forks also was subjected to the full force of a gusty gale. A small shed was blown down near Herbert, but further south little, if any, damage was done. Whereas Oamaru experienced heavy rain squalls last night, the back country stations behind Kurow received a hailstorm of some severity. Hailstones as large as pigeon eggs fell, hut fortunately the squall was of short duration.
