INCREASE IN BRITISH DESTROYER TONNAfiE AMERICA’S APPROVAL, PrMB Association— By Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, June 29. It is learned that the State Department has formally answered Britain’s request regarding destroyers in the affirmative, provided she assumes the responsibility for the increase. It is understood that the communication, which has not yet been published, takes the position that the only way for the Government to increase naval power is to invoke the escalator clause of the 1930 treaty. was reported last month that Britain had given formal notification of her intention to exceed the London treaty limits. It was then indicated that the State Department would not object to Britain increasing tier destroyer tonnage or shifting her tonnage to the cruiser classes. The feeling was understood to be that Britain had a clear legal right to build more cruisers and destroyers if she believed her position was endangered by competitive building,]
