{From Our Own Correspondent.) “ Time enough yet,” remarks the average farmer when discussing the weather prospects for _ something more akin to the severe winters for which Central Otago is noted. Mild weather, with the exception of a few hard frosts, has continued for the last two months, but to-day (Monday) cold showers have been experienced, and the indications suggest that more may be expected. Though the surrounding ranges are so far practically devoid of snow, the present change is now likely to bring snow on the tops, which will naturally induce frosts. Witfi the shortest day past colder weather may be expected, and most folk want to see it now so that a good spring may be looked for. Valedictory and Personal. The Rev. D. and Mrs Heggie, on the eve of their departure for Roxburgh, were tendered a complimentary social last Thursday evening in the Presbyterian Church. Mr Robert Ritchie (the chairman) referred to the vast amount of work which Mr Heggie had done, particularly as he came to Cromwell in the first year of the depression, and he had collected a great amount of produce and distributed it amongst the various mining camps. Mr Heggie in this work had shown no preference, and the church was thankful for this. The Chairman, in wishing Mr Heggie health and strength to carry on his work at Roxburgh, also referred to Mrs Heggie’s work in accompanying her husband on visits to the sick, and more particularly stressed how «she never failed to visit the hospital. Mr Heggie was tne recipient of a wallet of notes from Cromwell and Bannockburn friends. Rev. Mr Hendra, on behalf of the Methodist Church, extended best wishes for Mr Heggie’s success, in his new sphere, as did also Lieutenant Proctor, of the Salvation Army.

The mayor (Mr- Roberts) declared that he and Mr Reggie had been the 1 best of friends right from the start owing to their mutual desire to help in the alleviation of distress. Mr Roberts felt that Roxburgh would gain by the change. . ' . Mrs A. Stephens made a presentation to Mrs Heggie on behalf of the P.W.M.U.. and Mr Robert Bowie also made a presentation on behalf of the Sunday school for INdErs Heggie’s work as teacher and organiser. Mr Heggie said he had never been in a more difficult situation. It was hard to sit and listen to praise which in some instances he thought was not totally deserved. He recounted some of his experiences in : the relief of distress, and spoke in appreciation of the co-operation of other denominations in this work. He had been happy in Cromwell, and enjoyed the co-operation of his office-bearers. Ha felt the, departure very much, but hoped that the days would be brighter for the Cromwell Church under his successor. Persona!. Mr W. M. Fraser, from Waipawa, is expected in Cromwell next week to take up the duties of clerk of the court and mining registrar. Mr A. B. Cottee, the newly-appointed rector of the Cromwell District High School, is to take up his appointment on Friday next. Mr Douglas Smart, of the local Unemployment Bureau, on the eve of his departure for Wellington, where he has been appointed to a permanent position in the labour Office, was presented with a fountain pen from the Methodist Church. Football. Though the A grade football _ competition is now at an interesting juncture, with Alexandra and Matakanui both equal with 10 points, no further matches will be played till July 18, for next Saturday the county fixtures between Vincent and Maniototo will be played at Omakau, and the trial counties game for the selection of the Otago Sub-union team is to be played at Alexandra on July 11. The local District High School team was defeated at Alexandra on Friday by 17 points to 8. Vincent teams to represent the county against Maniototo on Saturday are as follow;—A team: Hesson (Alexandra), Elder (Cromwell), Campbell (Alexandra), Garden (Matakanui), Arbold and F.'
