LEATHERS V. M‘GREADY On the evening of the King’s Birthday, Sad Sam Leathers will make his first appearance before a Dunedin audience, when be will meet the British Empire champion. Earl APCready, at the Town Hall. Leathers, who is 6ft 4|in in height, is a leg bold specialist, being particularly suited to the application of such holds by reason of his build. He has a long and very powerful pair of legs, and uses them to apply the most amazing collection of leg and combination arm and leg holds it is possible to imagine. .His height is liable to convey a false impression of his weight, which is just over 16 stone, and he carries a particularly broad and powerful pair of shoulders. He conies to the Dominion with an outstanding record, which ho in no small measure substantiate:! when he met APCready at Wanganui last week on the occasion of his first appearance in a New Zealand ring, and succeeded in taking a fall out of the clever Canadian. Leathers used a very punishing typo of figure four scissors to secure his fall, ami all through the contest he repeatedly had the champion properly tied up with the manner in which he used his legs. From newspaper reports of this contest it would appear that Leathers was quite unlucky in that he did not secure the second fall from his opponent by means of his famous scissor hold, for just when it appeared to the audience that APCready would again have to submit, the latter struggled to bis feet, and then fell backwards upon Leathers, and in doing so dumped tlvo latter so heavily that be could not continue, thus ending the best contest ever witnessed in AVanganui. The box plans for Tuesday’s contest open at the D.T.C. to-morrow morning.
