MONTHLY BOARD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Hospital Board, hold last night, was attended by Messrs J. W. Dove (chairman), D. M'Lennan, A. Steel, M. Silverstone, A. F. Quolch, H. S. Skeat. Dr W. Newlands, Miss Runciraan, Miss Farquhar, and Mrs W. Ross. The Chairman referred to the death of Mrs Darroeh, for many years relief officer of the board, and it was decided to approve of his action in sending a letter of sympathy to the relatives of tlie deceased, members standing in silence. STATISTICS. The medical superintendent (Dr J. Thomson) submitted the following statistics for the Dunedin Hospital for April:—Patients remaining at March 31, 269; admitted during April, 458; remaining at April 30, 315. Operations performed during April totalled 192 (major 84 and minor IDS). Attendances at the out-patients’ department were 1,79.4. GRANTS APPROVED. Advice was received that the Minister of Flealth had approved of the renewal of a grant of £SO to the Citizens’ Day Nursery. Advice was received that the Minister of Health had approved of a grant of £BOO for the year 1930-1937 to the St. John Ambulance Association. SUN BALCONIES. The Director-general of Health advised that the department concurred in the proposal to extend the sun balconies of Miller and Houghton "wards of the hospital for use as clinical teaching rooms, and asked for detailed plans and specifications. The Chairman said this was an urgent matter for which provision would have to be made in accordance with the arrangement between the board aiul the "University Council. The honorary medical staff was contributing twothirds of the building cost up to £SOO. The matter was approved, the chairman and the architect to act. HOSPITAL BOARDS’ ASSOCIATION. The Hospital Boards’ Association w-rote advising that the annual subscription of £GI for the year ended March 31. 1937, was due.—Payment was approved. CONFERENCE ARRANGED. Mr J. A. Jenkins wrote in respect to the appointment of delegates and the meeting of the suggested conference for June 5 to discuss the subject of hospital co-ordination in Otago and Southland.—The chairman, Mr Quelch, and Miss Farquhar were appointed to represent the board. BLOOD TRANSFUSION. The Dunedin Voluntary Blond Transfusion Society made application for medals for six donors of blood who had given five or more transfusions. The annual meeting was to be held on June 4, when it was proposed to present the medals.—lt was decided to order the medals. LEGACY TO BOARD. Messrs Tonkinson and Wood advised of a legacy of £IOO under the will of the late Mrs S. S. Shacklock, to he devoted to the installing of a bed in the Batchelor Hospital. The Chairman said that the bed would have to he installed in the new Maternity Hospital. ACCOUNTS REMITTED. The board agreed to remit for a variety of reasons accounts totalling £3,378 13s scl. due for maintenance in the Dunedin Hospital and other institutions under its control. DEPARTMENTAL APPROVAL. Advice was received that the department concurred with the proposal -to erect a temporary massage gymnasium at an estimated cast of £l5O. The Director-genera! of Health wrote forwarding Ministerial approval of the equipping of the new ophthalmic theatre. TENDER ACCEPTED. It was reported that the tender of W. 11. Naylor Ltd. had boon accepted, as follows:—Removing the old building £330. erection of lecture theatre £3.719, and erection of corridors, etc., £4,800; total, £8,899. !
