SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY
CELEBRATIONS AT LAWRENCE

LAWRENCE. May 20,
The weather was fine for the seventyfifth anniversary of the first important discovery of gold in Otago. Owing to the pressure of parliamentary duties the Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb) was unable to attend the ceremony, which opened this afternoon by the planting of trees round the memorial cairn in the domain erected in memory of Gabriel Read. Those who planted trees were Messrs F. Moyle (aged 97). D. Keenan (94), A. Burns (90 founder of the ‘ Tuapeka Times and the first printer on the Goldfields), F W. Knight (80). The mayor (Mill. F. .Batchelor) laid a, wreath on the cairn, the function being a very impressive one. . Mr Movie, who has resided in Lawrence since 1861, and Mr Keenan both enjoy splendid health.
