EVICTION OF TENANTS
INTERESTS IS BE SAFEGUARDED MAGISTRATES GIVEN WIDER POWERS [From Ocr Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, May 20. Legislation of a temporary nature to safeguard the interests of tenants "'ill be introduced by the Government at an early date. The Prime Minister stated to-day that caucus had approved of a Bill that will give magistrates wider powers than they ha\'e at present to prevent the eviction of tenants during winter months. Mr Savage added that the measure would only be a palliative, and did not pretend to deal with the housing problem. That matter would be fully dealt with in legislation which would be introduced during the second portion of the session. The only way to deal satisfactorily with the problem of rents was to bud" decent houses for the people, and to provide the people with decent wages to enable them to pay the rent. The Governmenfc did not want private people who built houses to lose money.
