WHEAT YIELD IN DOMINION
ENOUGH FOR MILLERS’ REQUIREMENTS ' 4,500,000 BUSHELS PURCHASED BY WHEAT COMMITTEE Up to yesterday evening the New Zealand AA’heat Committee had handled approximately 4,500,000 bushels of this season’s milling wheat (says to-day s Christchurch ‘Press’). This total is about 200,000 bushels less than the quantity put through by May 18, 1935. The heavy quantity last year at this period was duo entirely to the dry season promoting an early harvest. The current season, in marked contrast, has been very much delayed, and the figures for the two periods bear no relationship to the final yields of the two years. Tlie condition of the wheat coming out of stack is reported to be generally good, although a portion of it is damaged by sprouting. Last year the wheat committee bought just short of 5,000,000 bushels, which, along with 2,000,000 bushels carried over from the previous season, was sufficient to seo the millers through till 1936. This season the committee commenced operations witli empty bins, but in local milling circles it is considered that sufficient wheat for all requirements will be forthcoming from New Zealand growers. This situation has been brought about by the heavy yield of 39.02 bushels (interim return) an acre, compared with last season’s final yield of 26.32 bushels, and the greater area sown in wheat.
