BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

LAST WEEK’S PRICES MAINTAINED Nearly all sections at the Burnside . sales to-day maintained recent values, and only on occasions did prices vary slightly one way or the other. Fat cattle and lambs were sold at practically last week’s rates, and fat sheep were selling at firm prices when the ‘ Star ’ went to press. Improved values were recorded in the store cattle division, while most fat pigs were worth about the same as a week ago. The general quality of the 268 head of fat cattle penned was not up to the standard shown last week. There was a smaller entry of prime heavy-weights, and the medium class was barely as good as usual, while there was a lad end of light stuff. Some specially fine cows wore forward, but as usual, the bulk of the entry was made .ip of medium and light sorts, v.ith several pens of weedy specimens to finish. Throughout, the sale was a brisk one, resulting in last week’s prices being realised. At times when extra iijhtv pens were reached prices improved ali’ghtly. Mr Dunnery f of Mqsgic!,. sent in a draft that claimed the highest price of the sale—£l3 12s 6d—and other consignments from the Taicri sold from £l2 to £l3s 10s. Better quality lambs than was the case at last week’s market were yarded to-day. Some very good sorts showing weight and quality were on offer, and the medium weights were fairly even in quality. Light sorts comprised the remainder of the penning. 1 reezing buyers were anxious to buy at run schedule rates, while butchers were keen purchasers of anything showing weight and quality. The sale could be classed as a good one, with prices from a par to, a shade lower than last week. A medium-sized entry of fat sheep numbered some 1,500. The majority ot the best sheep forward were ewes, some of which showed extra special quality. The penning was rounded off by an entry of medium and light stuff. Wethers made up the smallest total seen for some time, while the quality was below the average set at recent yardings. Prices were firm at the opening of the sale, and it was considered that there would be little variation before the finish. Several consignments of vealers in the store pens were of exceptional quality, and were greatly in demand by buyers, whose prices were quite equal to those of last week. One show animal brought £5 ss, and other sorts averaged from £1 10s to £3. There was a medium-sized yarding of cattle, consisting mainly of young sorts, with an odd pen or two of two and three-year-old steers. Anything showing breeding and condition sold well, but inferior sorts were easier by about 10s a "head. The best three-year-old steers brought to £5 17s, the two-year-olds to £4 15s, heifers to £4, and forward cows to £3 ss. Boners again sold at late rates.

There were 120 fats and 140 stores in the pig pens. Bacon pigs were a little cheaper than last week, selling from £3 to £4 10s, and being equal to about 6Jd lb, while porkers remained about the same as previously, bringing from £2 5s to £3, or 7d lb.
