BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES

RAGING AT FLENNNffTON REGULAR BACHELOR'S NEWMARKET SUGGESB OF DOMINION-BRED HORSES Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, March 1. The weather was sultry and the attendance excellent for the V.R.C. meeting at Flemington. , There was a sensational opening in the Pines Hurdle Race, in which Blackford's time equalled the world's record. This was mainlv due to the solid pace of African, who was beaten narrowly. It was Blackford's third win in as many starts in hurdles. He is the most promising jumper seen in recent years. The New Zealand-bred Gold Rod led all the way for an effortless win in the Sires Produce Stakes. He cost 350 guineas as a yearling and has now won approximately £4,700 in stakes as the result of three wins and a third in four starts. Gold Rod is the logical Derby favourite. It was Fidelity's first defeat in four starts. He had no hope against the winer. Boongarry finished well and shaped like a stayer. He will possibly do well next season. Gold Rod's win credited the trainer, George Price, with his third Sires win. He scored previously with Kuvera and Sir John. Sylvandale had a comfortable win in the Essendon Stakes. Cuddle set a sound pace, but was outclassed in the final furlong. She should be better suited to the handicap conditions in the Cup. Dick Devon caused a surprise by securing third place. Marabou was last after a disappointing performance, and is likely to prove costly at the 5,550 guineas paid for him in November last. A brilliant finishing effort gave the Queenslander, Regular Bachelor, victory in the Newmarket Handicap. He has had two wins in two starts in Victoria. It was Taiwan's first ride at Flemington. Valiant Chief's second was a good effort, and he is likely to go to Sydney for the Autumn Meeting. Cardinal was a close third and just beat Barracker. It was mutually agreed that F. Shean should ride Gay Blonde. 'The mare was prominent early, but faded away. Closing Time and Arachne were never dangerous. Regular Bachelor did his early racing in Queensland, where he was bred. He is related on the dam's side to that good performer, Highland. Allunga outstayed his opponents in the St. Leger Stakes and won comfortably. Viceroy ran a surprisingly good race. Young Idea spoilt his prospects by fighting for his head in the early stages and his rider was' forced to take control .10 furlongs from home. Bustard proved a disappointment and the New Zealander, East Cape, was outclassed. Allunga has enhanced his Australian Cup prospects. Amalia appeared to have the Brunswick Stakes won when Greenhorn came with a brilliant run on the outside and won in the last stride. Aitchengee made a good run and did well to secure third place. The Cup fancies, Hot Shot an Bunsby Gaze, fared badly. Greenhorn has won several races since coming from New Zealand some years ago. He is partial to Flemington course and should go well in the Cup. Palfresco is amiss and is an unlikely starter at the meeting. Limond Lad is suffering from an injured heel and will not race again this season. Results: — PINES HURDLE RACE, 600sovs. 2m. Messrs T.
