MONDAY, MARCH 2. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) MURDER CHARGE. Hugh Urquhart Neil Gunn appeared on remand charged with the murder of William Beatty at Waitepeka on February 22. Instructed by Messrs Duncan and M‘Gregor, Mr C. J. L. AVhite appeared for the accused. Chief-detective Young asked for a remand until March 9, and this was granted. DRUNKENNESS. Albert Norman Sutherland pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness and was fined 20s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. INTOXICATED WHILE DRIVING. Herbert Donald M‘Conn ell was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car. He pleaded guilty. ... Sergeant O’Shea said that the police saw a motor car standing outside an hotel in High street. The accused, who was intoxicated, got into the car and attempted to drive away. To the magistrate the accused said ho had been driving for 12 years and used the car for pleasure purposes. The magistrate imposed a fine of £lO and doctor’s expenses (£1 Is), the accused to be prohibited from driving for 12 months. MOTORIST REMANDED. James Ransford Morrison was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor cycle, and was remanded until Friday, bail being fixed in self £25; and one surety of a similar amount, a condition being that he did not drive in the meantime. ONE MONTH’S IMPRISONMENT. Gordon Simmons appeared for sentence on charges of being idle and disorderly and of the theft of ISs and two two-gallon cream cans. He also pleaded guilty to travelling on a railway train between Invercargill and Gore without paying the fare. The Magistrate said that Simmons had had his chance when he was previously before the court, but had not taken it. On the charge of theft he was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, with hard labour, and on the charge of travelling on a (rain without paying the fare he was convicted and discharged. As another magistrate had heal'd the idle and disorderly charge, that would be dealt with on Friday. MAINTENANCE DEFAULTER. After evidence had been heard in the case in which Neil George M'Kinnon was proceeded against for default of a maintenance order, the arrears to November 4, 1935, amounting to £52 10s, the defendant was sentenced to two mouths’ imprisonment at Invercargill.
