Mr H. C. M ! Queen left to-day for Auckland, where he will join the lecturing staff of the University. • Mr L. W. Spencer, of Invercargill, was a through passenger to-day for Wellington. He is travelling Homo by the Jluahine. Mr W. W, Batchelor, chairman of the Dunedin City Council’s Reserves Committee, left to-day for Auckland to attend the annual conference of the Horticultural Association. . Delegates for the Municipal Association’s conference at Napier who travelled by the second express to-day were:—Rev. E. T. Cox and Mr G. A. Lewin (Dunedin City Council), Mr A. L. Burk , (Green Island Borough Council), Messrs John Miller and W. F. Sturman (Invercargill City Council).
Doctors John Fulton, Iverach, and Speight returned to-day after complet-i ing their training with the Medical Company at Sutton. _ , Mr-Paavo Simelius, Consul, for Finland in Australia and New Zealand, arrived last night, and is staying at Wain’s Hotel.
In the Mackie competition at the New South Wales Highland gathering at Sydney, in January, Mr Peter Davidson, the young Dunedin piper, gained the society’s gold medal for most points, and also'the right 'to have hi* name inscribed on the £4OO Mackie Trophy. Mr Davidson was "the official piper of the local Gaelic Society. Mr J. Ritchie, leading operator at the gas department, is retiring on superannuation next month alter 40 years’ service. , Dr C. S. Murray left to-day to spend, a holiday in the south. At the meeting of the Taieri County Council yesterday a letter was received from the district medical officer of health requesting, the appointment of Mr Fi Varney as sanitary inspector in place of Mr S. G. Wells, who has been transferred.—lt was decided to confirm the appointment. To spend a six weeks’ fishing holiday in New Zealand, General Cyril N. MacMullen, general officer commanding the Eastern Command in India, arrived at Auckland by the Wanganella. He was met by Major-general Sir William Sin-clair-Burgess, officer commanding the New Zealand Forces. ,
In the course of a world tour Dr Daniel A. Poling, world president of the Christian Endeavour Union, and editor of the ‘ Christian Herald,’ New York, arrived at Auckland by the Wanganella. He is accompanied by Mr# Poling, and they will spend a week in New Zealand before sailing for the United States -by the Mariposa' next Saturday. . “ Staff, members of the Dunedin Publie Library - to-day entertained at morning tea Miss A. K. Elliot, who has been appointed to the libraiianship ‘at Timaru, and Miss M. Martin, who hag resigned. On behalf of the staff, Mr A. G. W. Dunningham (librarian) made a presentation of a rug to Miss Elliot and 1 -a pair l of. book ends to Miss Martin.; . , ■
