A narrow escape from a bathing tragedy occurred at Milton Domain Baths on Tuesday (reports the Bruce ‘Herald’). A girl, aged about 14 years, member of a motoring party who were camping in the adjacent paddock, after swimming for a short period, endeavoured to “ depth ” the baths by standing up in the water near the deep end. She became powerless to recover herself, and was sinking when her plight was noticed and gallant efforts at rescue were made by a schoolboy named Ernest Marshall. The girl seized her rescuer and both went under. Fortunately Mr D. C. Bannatyne, of Dunedin, who is acting as coach to the local Swimming Club, was in the vicinity. He noticed the danger, dived in fully clothed, and rescued the girl, who quickly recovered, none the worse for her perilous adventure.
